Thirteen

What happens when you see me weak?
What happens when I fail?
What happens when the dragon shuffles?
What happens when you touch his scales?

I know a dragon rests inside me,
and with spells I give it sleep.
And although it flags and drains me
a watch on him I'll always keep.

Does it scare you that he's hungry?
In the dark and dying light?
Does it scare you that the binding
Might not last another night?

With chant and chains and loving words
I hold the beast at bay.
And feel the warming of the sun,
We live another day.
